During the accident, Matt’s cell phone fell out of reach. His leg was pinned so that he couldn’t physically leave the truck. His truck landed almost directly under an underpass, hiding the wreckage from the road. Because it was over Christmas and he was planning to go to Missouri for a funeral, neither his place of work or friends in Indiana realized he was missing. Likewise, those in Missouri assumed he’d decided not to attend the funeral.

Matt lost the lower half of his left leg in the accident. He also broke his right hand, and had a variety of cuts and bruises. In addition, he didn’t eat and had very little to drink for 6 days. Therefore, he had lost weight and was dehydrated.
